Glen Rock, N.J., Resident and Former College Athlete to Deliver Valedictory Address at Spring Commencement

Valedictorian Kelly Keane ’00, ’14 graduates with a master’s degree in mental health counseling.

Kelly Keane ’00, a resident of Glen Rock, N.J., and a 2014 graduate of Manhattan College’s Mental Health Counseling program, will deliver the valedictory speech on May 17 at the College’s Spring Commencement.

“Kelly is an intelligent, empathic and well-rounded student. She juggled work, family and education, and was able to manage these different demands in an admiring manner,” said Ming-Hui Hsu, Ph.D., assistant professor of graduate education.

Keane received her bachelor’s degree in psychology from Manhattan College in 2000. She attended the College on a soccer scholarship and also played lacrosse. After earning her undergraduate degree, Keane worked as a school counselor for Clarkstown Central School District in New City, N.Y. Most recently, she was a counseling intern for Care Plus N.J., in Haledon, N.J., while maintaining a caseload of eight to 10 patients, and developing and implementing treatment plans.

“I have spent so many years at Manhattan, and although I am sad to leave, I am looking forward to the next chapter in my life,” Keane said. “This program has only intensified my desire to work in a mental health setting and make a difference in peoples lives. I will forever be grateful to all my teachers in the counseling program.”

After graduation, Keane says she hopes to pursue a career as a counselor with at-risk youth or young adults and eventually start her own practice.

Keane will walk alongside nearly 300 students who will graduate from the Schools of Business and Engineering with master’s degrees; the School of Continuing and Professional Studies with bachelor’s and master’s degrees; and the School of Education and Health with master’s degrees and professional diplomas.

Dominick M. Servedio, P.E., executive chairman of STV Group, Inc., will deliver the keynote address at Manhattan College’s Spring Commencement, and will also receive an honorary Doctor of Engineering.
