Eugene Bender ’14 and a graduate of Manhattan College’s chemical engineering program will deliver the valedictory address at the College’s Spring Commencement on Saturday, May 16.
Bender received his bachelor of science degree in chemical engineering in May 2014 with minors in chemistry and mathematics. He received a presidential scholarship, performing arts scholarship and the Milton Williams Performing Arts Rotary Club scholarship during his undergraduate years.
For the past two years, Bender has served as the head chemical engineering researcher in Manhattan College’s research program. He designed failure analysis experiments for a set of broken devices and proposed design improvements. He also processed animal byproducts into fine aerogels for applications such as artificial skin and drug delivery.
Outside the classroom, Bender was president and concertmaster for Manhattan College’s orchestra and was secretary of the jazz band. For four years, he performed an ensemble member and played improvised solos at induction ceremonies, masses and weddings.
Bender will walk alongside approximately 200 students who will graduate from the Schools of Business and Engineering with master’s degrees; the School of Continuing and Professional Studies with bachelor’s and master’s degrees; and the School of Education and Health with master’s degrees and professional diplomas.
Eileen Murray ’80, co-chief executive officer and a member of the management committee at Bridgewater Associates, LP, the world’s largest hedge fund, will deliver the keynote address at the College’s Spring Commencement. He will also receive an honorary Doctor of Humane Letters.
