College Renames Department of Physical Education and Human Performance to the Department of Kinesiology

With a growing number of programs and courses being offered, the department of Kinesiology name change further encompasses the expanding field.

Manhattan College’s department of Physical Education and Human Performance was recently renamed the Department of Kinesiology (the study of human movement). This decision is a result of the growing number of programs and courses being offered within the School of Education and Health.

With support from the American Kinesiology Association (AKA), Manhattan College is among nearly 200 colleges and universities around the country adopting the name change.

“The primary purpose of the name change was to make the chief title of the department more inclusive, unified and applicable to all students’ majors, interests, activities and career goals,” says Jeff Cherubini, Ph.D., department chair and associate professor.

In terms of professional acceptance and recognition, faculty in the department of Kinesiology are members of several professional associations directly affiliated with AKA and/or utilize kinesiology knowledge in professional practice. The professional associations include the National Athletic Trainers Association (NATA), the American Psychological Association (APA) – Division 47, the Association for Applied Sport Psychology (AASP), the American College of Sports Medicine (ACSM), the National Association for Sport and Physical Education (NASPE), and the American Association for Health, Physical Education, Recreation & Dance (AAHPERD) – Research Consortium.

“Our department has a long tradition of excellence and numerous esteemed alumni,” Cherubini adds. “It is my intent to continue to nurture and grow the development of and excellence within, both our physical education teaching and exercise science programs.”
