As a Licensed Professional Engineer and a Certified Professional Traffic Operator, Robert Brakman has more than 40 years of experience in transportation planning, civil design, traffic engineering, Intelligent Transportation Systems, construction inspection, environmental permitting, agency coordination, and project management.
His experience includes advancing complex capital and operational projects from initial conception through construction. He has managed and prepared preliminary designs, feasibility studies, environmental impact studies, and alternatives analyses.
Before starting at Manhattan College in 2002 as an adjunct instructor, he was a Manager of Transportation Systems for Jacobs Engineering. He has also served as Regional Supervisor of Transportation Planning and Development with the New York State Department of Transportation (NYSDOT).
Publications & Professional Activities
Brakman is a Fellow and Past President of the Institute of Transportation Engineers (ITE), Met Section. A technical reviewer of the Institute of Transportation Engineers Recommended Practice: Context Sensitive Solutions in Designing Major Urban Thoroughfares for Walkable Communities. His most recent professional publications include ITS at the Hudson Valley Traffic Management Center, for the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers and Roundabout Retrofit for the ITE.

Brakman was recently appointed to the Planning Board of the Town of Esopus, Ulster County, N.Y. In addition, he serves his community as President of the Rondout Harbor Homeowners Association, Port Ewen, NY
