CHMG 750 – Emulsion Technology

A course designed to guide solving problems in colloids, dispersions, suspensions and dispersions applicable to cosmetics, pharmaceuticals, food, adhesives, personal-care products, advanced coatings and other applications where advanced understanding of multi-phase liquids and structures is required. Emulsions and suspensions play a central role in modern engineering applications. These materials have boundaries and interactions leading to stability issues. They also require advanced characterization and formulation concepts. Topics covered:

  • Emulsions and suspensions
  • Stability of colloid systems
  • Ionic and anionic surfactant chemistry and effects
  • Micelle formation and structure
  • Characterization of discrete mixtures
  • Thickening and gelation of mixtures

CHMG 751 – Industrial Regulation and Quality

Many industries fall directly under federal, state or city regulations designed to protect society. Industrial laws are embodies in the Code of Federal Regulations (CFR). Regulatory authorities include the Food and Drug Administration (FDA), the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA), the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms (BATF), and the Department of Homeland Security. Many more companies are finding advantages to the improved quality driven by these agencies, leading to an array of quality management systems, including Six Sigma®, total quality management (TQM), and good manufacturing or laboratory practices (GXP). This course is designed to provide a survey of factors pertaining to regulated and other quality-driven industries. Topics covered:

  • Regulatory authority, especially the CFR, FDA and USDA
  • Quality management systems, especially Six Sigma and GXP
  • Quality measurement, including ASTM and other testing
  • Document design, including SOPs, inventories, guidance documents and applications
  • Safety, training and cleanliness as part of the quality process
  • Process control techniques, including measurements, records and decision making

CHMG 752 – Advanced Processing Theory

A course designed to guide solving problems in complex flows applicable to cosmetics, pharmaceuticals, food, adhesives, personal-care products, advanced coatings and other applications where advanced understanding of multi-phase liquids and structures is required. Topics covered:

  • Non-Newtonian and time-dependant flow
  • Hydrodynamics
  • Particulate flows
  • Surface forces
  • Phases and fusion
  • Heat transfer at boundaries
  • Flow with reactions and other heat generating systems

CHMG 753 – Advanced Processing Techniques

A course to guide design of multi-phase processing systems applicable to cosmetics, pharmaceuticals, food, adhesives, personal-care products, advanced coatings and other applications where advanced understanding of multi-phase liquids and structures is required. This course meets the needs of modern industries with complex flow problems requiring attention to unstable, multi-phase and mixed flows with consequently difficult pumping, mixing and homogenization, as well as advanced finishing techniques including atomization and drying. Topics covered:

  • Advanced flow system design
  • Advanced pump types
  • Mixers and homogenizers
  • Atomization
  • Drying
