Physical Education

Program Overview

The professional curriculum in physical education and human performance, integrated with courses in liberal arts and sciences, is designed to prepare teachers and leaders for elementary and secondary schools.

Students completing the course of study have the opportunity to apply for certification (K–12) from the New York State Department of Education. Since the Physical Education program is registered with the N.Y.S. education department, it carries reciprocal agreements with 27 other states for certification.

By coupling the specialized teacher preparation program with an effective liberal arts curriculum, the program prepares graduates who are not only well trained in a specific area of the profession, but who are also developed as persons possessing distinctive and desirable cultural and spiritual attributes, with training in reason and logic, who have extensive knowledge of fundamental scientific processes.

The course of study emphasizes the scientific principles involved in human movement, and comprehensive analysis of basic teaching methods including subject-matter content, principles, techniques, administration and evaluation procedures.
