Physical Education and Human Performance

The Mission of the Department of Physical Education and Human Performance is to provide a contemporary, person-centered education in an interdisciplinary study of human movement concepts and practical applications thereof.

The program at Manhattan College prepares students to create and provide meaningful movement experiences for persons from early childhood through adulthood.

Curriculum

The curriculum is comprised of both required and elective courses that provide opportunities for developing expertise in understanding human movement. In all classes, the theory and application of human movement is explained, both the "whys' and hows'" are examined carefully. Focus is on putting theory into practice to improve human performance. In addition to providing you with a detailed liberal arts and science education you will receive a solid pre-professional background that will provide you the skills and knowledge necessary to pursue graduate study, professional certification, and careers in the fields of physical education and human performance.

The department core curriculum is built around several outcomes whose content is central to the discipline of human movement. The outcomes include Scientific Foundations (Biological, Behavioral and Social Sciences), Humanities, Program Planning, Professional Development and Skill.

Recognizing the various professional goals of students, the department offers two majors. These areas include Teacher Preparation  and Exercise Science.

Students in the Department of physical education and human performance have the opportunity to obtain 2 Olympic Certifications, the U.S. Wrestling Olympic Bronze Coaching Certification and the U.S. Weightlifting Olympic Club Coaches certification. Both certifications are completed as a part of normal class requirements, once additional membership fees are paid.

In addition, professional practicums are provided by this program, with students working out in the field. Areas include elementary school, middle school, and high school, as well as executive corporate fitness centers, health fitness centers, cardiac rehabilitation centers, strength and conditioning programs in collegiate areas, nutrition, occupational therapy, chiropractics and physicians assistants, physical therapy, clinical hospital settings, and sports management facilities.
