Physical Education

Program Overview

The professional curriculum in the Physical Education Teaching K-12 major, integrated with courses in liberal arts and sciences, is designed to prepare teachers and leaders for elementary and secondary schools.  The program of study emphasizes the scientific principles involved in human movement, and comprehensive analysis of basic teaching methods including subject-matter content, principles, techniques, administration and evaluation procedures.

Within the program of study, major courses also provide a solid foundation for continued graduate school study in physical education, health education, special education, adapted physical activity, curriculum and instruction, supervision and administration, and other education related fields.

The program is approved by the New York State Education Department (NYSED). Program completion leads to NYS teaching certification in Physical Education K-12. NYSED has certification reciprocity agreements with many other states. The program is also accredited by the Council for the Accreditation of Educator Preparation (CAEP).
